And again.  2 years later.I seem to have this uncanny ability to write and forget to write again.   yes I'm still working on my nail business.   I have had a lot of ups and downs but more ups than downs but still ..   Life aint easy.   That's for sure.   But  all  while i'm trying to get my business up and running. I'm hit with the lack of motivation. Because it takes a lot out of me having to take care of my mom.   I'm talking ... takes me have a day to get her cleaned up and situated sometimes.

But you know what?  I'll do it again and again  if it means keeping my mom with me.  I won't put her in a nursing home no matter how much  it takeso ut of me.    She raised me for 18 plus years  It hink it's the least I can do  and take care of her for the rest of her life the best way  I know.  Mom Is doing good though.   she's sitting there watching her  tv ..  on the Roku screensaver... I have caught myself standing there watching it too.

As for my business? Oh it's coming along slowly but surely.    now I got the energy to rearrange my office.  Going to start making videos.  Start reviewing products.   Start doing unboxing.  ( when I can afford to buy stuff )  I'm building my business on my o wn income rather than getting a loan.   Cause I cannot get one on my bad credit.   Thats ok. It just means this b usiness was built with diligience and time and my own heart.   And it's going to stick around even if I don't make money. It's still going to be here.

Hard part for me right now is the fact that  I can't get a regular 9 to 5 job. Even in a salon as a nail tech.  we're in the era of "everything needs to be done in an hour "    ugh ..  this chop shop crap again.  Sorry I'm not doing nails under an hour. I just can't.  Not that I don't want to I just am NOT that fast.  nor do I desire to increase my speed.  And that is partly why they won't hire me.   They always ask. "Can you do it under an hour?"  um ..  if I say no then  the interview is pointless.   Not to mention. I don't have anyone to watch my  mom nor can I afford adult elder caretakers.

So I'm going to do press on nails.   Though  being told  at one time that  Press on nails are not professional.   That's fine.   But it works for clients who need something quick and simple to put on.  Something to make them feel beautiful. Feel powerful.   To simply be what they want to be. Man or woman.  They are nails for all people.  From  the abled to disabled. To the  Christians to the Muslims   From the  honorable to the inglorious.  For all  that are gloriously unashamed and unapologetic.

This ... is the way.

So yeah .. being told that it's not professional had set me back a bit.  Reason it was said it's because I was offered a job.  I wanted so bad to take this job. I had to choose. My love ( my job ) or my beloved ( My mom )   I chose my mom.   So being told that  I couldn't do those in salon. Or promote my work.   I'm assuming that was the reasoning.   But thing is ..  Press on nails may NOT be professional in the eyes of the nail tech industry.   They are done .. BY a professional who is I .. who has went to school and studied the craft and loved it.   It is I who has passed the written and the  practical exams with flying colors (when I went  years later  to take my cosmetology test I had to take the written again. )   So yes ...  It may not be professional. But again. It's designed and created by a licensed professional.  It's good enough for me.

Many say that Apres Gel X (seriously people STOP calling other dupes and off brands Gel X   eesh .. that's like calling pink and white nails Solar nails when really it's a CND  BRAND )   is not professional nail product.  Again.   it's still a nail enhancement.  Still requires skill.  Technically still requires a professional to apply them but no one is going to hold them to their words  - For professionals only -   (smirks)   Anyone can be a nail tech.  be it licensed or influencer or someone who just loves nails. Period.    All I ask is if you're going to work on clients?  Be honorable. Not Inglorious.   Do the right thing and take the schooling and the exams.  This license is seriously something to be very proud of.

So I may start writing up again and start making videos about these things I have written   I'm finding I have a lot of topics I want to  talk about.   From   Are Press on 's professional?   To   What is a chop shop.  Are they the same or different than what i consider "Sweat shops?"   Basically chop shops in my opinion are just quicky salons that get everything done in a hour.   No frills no fancy beans no mimosas or coffee.  No smiles and f un conversations.  Just chop chop get er done.      Sweat shops are .. unfortunately I don't use this term lightly but  more I think about it it's derogatory.    But  There are A LOT of these here and the state board do not regulate or check to make sure.  Basically  these are people who are of the same culture  who come in sponsored to become a citizen or get their visas.  They usually come in to work at the salon in question.  Under a licensed professional  who has been doing this for 3 plus years.  They become apprenticed  and have to work and garner hours  ( more than we do if we went direct to school )   They can earn money  how much they make is .. well  I don't know I never asked but I would think  they don't make the same amount as we would.   Not til they h ave accumulated enough hours under  the professional and then they can go to Boards and take their exams.  If they pass they get their license and are full fledge.   It's fully legal.   Even if I don't like it.  I still think it would benefit them to go to a accredited school. Because not only do you l earn  the craft. You learn the socialization skills. You learn  about people.   And what this job is about.   You learn how to interact. What to do what not to do. How to do or how NOT to do.  Things like that.   When you work in the shop. You do nothing but watch your teacher.  Then you copy  and you do it.  There's no passion in that. There's no socialization.  There's no heart or care.  Just smiles and technical skills.  This is what theydo day in day out.    That's why I call it a sweat shop.  These folks deserve the chance to know what they're getting into. To learn the craft and why i t's so valuable and precious to us  who have went through schooling.   I feel they deserve to know why they can love this job.  And enjoy it.     Because if your heart is in this job. Your skills will show for it.   But .. sadly.  Because of this.   The customers and the world  will believe this is the standard that is set for us.  To get it done in a hour.

I simply refuse.     My job is to take care of my clients.  To make them laugh to enjoy sitting in my chair.  To feel safe. To be safe.   They will always know. It's going to take more than 2 hours.  you are here for care and self care.  To be pampered and made to feel glorious.   Otherwise .. if I can't make you feel comfortable?   Then I am doing a disservice to all the nail techs and our craft.

Anyway that's another blog to write about.   One day I will be back in the salon. Working with customers.I miss it with a hard core passion.   For now I'll design press on nails and  sell them.  And one day? I'll even open my o wn shop and size them for people who come in  and I would even put it on them.   on top of doing my regular services.  It's a dream.  One day  it will happen.   But in due time.   For now.  I try to get up and running.  So keep an eye out on my  YT and my Instagram and even my facebook. I'm not big on social media but .. Least I try.

Presenting Talk to the Hand

Thursday, January 12, 2017

Yes I know I need to stop taking forever to post.   Sometimes I forget sometimes I just can't be bothered.

SO ...  HI HI HI My peoples!

Well I need my blog today. So much is going on.  Trying to find a job.  Trying to come to terms with going blind and being deaf still.    Trying to accept and acknowledge the fact ..   15 years ago  I could do anything.   Now I have to learn to realize .. I can't always do the things  I was capable of.  I must learn to accept my limitations and adapt.    But it's not easy.   Just .. not so easy.

I have to force myself to THINK like a blind person.   I'm a VERY Very ..  did I mention VERY  visual person?   I live on all thins visual.   The worst thing that can happen to a visual person. Who tends to be an artist.  Is going blind.

"But Ami you're typing.   You can read this. You can't be blind"

Blind is a catch all phrase for visual impairment.  I hate and loath using the word impairment.  It implies to me that I'm a broken doll who can be fixed.   Well bud/buddette.   You can't fix these baby browns.

So my field of vison?  EH  it's been a few years I'll get back to you on that when I go see my  beloved Doctor Pierce.   Wonderful doctor.    Anyhoo ..  so my field of vision is I have no  peripheral vision.  It's also  legally called - Retinitus Pigmentosa -   But because I'm deaf  I have what's called  Usher's Syndrome type 3.   Dude I got a rare disease!   And get this. It don't effect your intelligence level or your health.  WELL ... about that.   I got the bad end of the clumsy/balance part so yeah .. bumping into thins and tripping over a floating cat hair is hazardous to your health.   *laughs*     But seriously I'm glad it's type 3.   Albeit that it's rare.  It's just  I'm lucky. It's slow progressing.   It's really interesting just how rare it is and what group of people it shows up in.   Yeah cool huh ..   Check this link.  It will open in a new window.  Otherwise read on my loyal peoples!

About Usher's syndrome type 3

As I had said I have a lot going on.   My hearing dog ( no not certified  but personally trained by me ) she's also my  keep me sane pupper.   Boo.   She has a growth on her right side and just  seems to have grown BIGGER since October. I said if it went pass being  ping pong ball then we'll take her to the vet soon as I get the money saved up.  Well it swelled up to  I guess softball size it's a handful.  I don't know how big a soft ball is.  I don't go palming people's softballs!   *pun intended*    But either way it grew triple the size  during the christmas holidays.

I have it all explained on my gofundme page.   I can not believe I actually set one up.  I'm embarrassed to ask for money.  But still this is my baby. She keeps me sane.   Keeps me grounded.   She's my furbaby and my family.   I posted it on Imgur the other day too ..  checked it the 12 hours later. Only to be dismayed by the fact  a negative 8 points.   WHAT?!!   It's sad and it hurts.  But  I understand.  You can only trust people so much on the internet.    But my fiance Russ was so kind he clicked like so that it became a -7    It still  was sweet so that made my day.     So  if you want to donate please it would help. But I'm really really appreciating the prayers even more.  So far so good.   But we're not out of the woods yet. *sighs*

So She has surgery  on Jan 23rd.  Simple surgery but we still have to worry over the fact.  Once they float the  tumor in water. It can go two ways.  Float an the news is good.  Sink ..  she has cancer or it's a bad thing.    I'm just ..   it's hard.   4 years ago I lost my Georgie.   Nov 16 we lost our 17 year old cat Sigmund.   I don't want to lose  Boo.  I'm still lamenting over it.

Not to mention being financially strapped.  I'm talking every  dime in my name goes to bills.   Least I am able to pay them. Just getting them paid off  to keep from getting further in debt is a killer.   So the donation helps pay for her care credit.   It's one more bill I cannot afford  the monthly fee's but for her ..   I'll go into debt  to keep her healthy and safe.

So thank you for reading this. I don't feel so overwhelmed.    If you got any questions or  advice.  Feel free to post and ask or tell.

Talk to the Hand. Oooh yaaas talk to my hand! LoL

Seriously I gotta stop  taking all this time to post.   But I did have a reason though.   Even though some  was lack of motivation.  Some was lack of inspiration.   Most was income based.   And health based.

As you know I'm going blind.  I'm also deaf.  I get questions a lot "How do you see what you're doing"   My smart ass comment usually is "Very carefully"   But on a serious note. I have a small window that I can see from.  nails you just need to see what's in front of you.  If I was hearing it would be no problem.   I could talk without looking up.   Lately  it's been depressing me so much that doing my job   reminds me of my disability.  Reminds me .. "Hey you're deaf too  remember that"   I can't hear you unless I see you.  Now you can imagine how scared spitless I am about becoming blind.  But I hold on to the hope  that my central vision will always be good.   Pertaining I don't get glaucoma or cataracts.

Oh yeah did I mention I'm diabetic too?  Its hereditary.   My sister has Glaucoma .. my brother is diabetic.  My dad is blind and diabetic too.   Despite that .. I thank god every day that my siblings don't hate me.   For what our parents did.   I rarely talk to them.  I never met t hem but yet the love is there at least from me.  What would I do if I lost any of my siblings before I could meet them?  I'm  not sure how I would survive that.  Hard enough knowing I may never get to see and tell my biological dad thank you for giving my mom me.   I just want to  be able to look at them with my own eyes.  Hear them with my own ears.   Hug them with my own arms.   I want to know what it feels like to be a daughter to a man.  A sister to my siblings.  And an Aunt to  my neices and nephews.  Yeah .. that love from me is unconditional.   I can  honestly look at them on facebook and see ..   where my  love for things came from.  I share it with them. I'm proud of that fact.   Specially my sister I share a birthday with.   I probably if I had grown up with  them I would have idolized her.   I kind of idolize her quietly (lol )   Strong woman of worth.  I want to be strong like her.

ANYHOO!   So  this blog is supposed to be about nails and myself.   So you get an idea of what has been up for the last two years.   I did mention I think that i went back to beauty school. Now I am a full fledged cosmetologist!   I got my license and all.  Now I really want to get back into doing nails and hair.   I can't wait for my mentor to  open her salon.  Id o want to go back  to school to become a teacher.   They're my extended family.   That school / salon is my home and I want to go home.

So  right now I'm working on getting my debt cleared up.  So I can  one day  open my own salon or at least my own studio.  Do nails  at MY pace.  MY time.    So   problem is finding a place I can turn into a studio  and making sure I can afford it on my own income.  And  hopefully  get a following.   Or finding a salon that will allow me to do that.  I admit.   For me being a nail tech or stylist isn't about the money. It's the interaction with the clients and  having fun with them.    My clients are my friends and part of my family.   That's just me.   Bring me your hands .. I will cherish them.   I will treat you the way I want you to treat me. Like a friend. I will be honest with you if something is right or wrong.   Tell me your  woe's and your joy.   I will listen and offer advice.    If advice is wanted that is.   I won't lie for you but I won't divulge  what is told to me.   Oh  and politics?   That's a big iffy there.   I don't quite recommend talking about it. Unless you're like me.  You respect other people's  choices and beliefs.  And don't go shoving it down  our throats  and fighting with anyone to  accept yours.

My salon?   Would be like Beauty shop  with Queen Latifa.    That's what I want.   I want that atmosphere.  I want that love.  I want that crazy collard greens  lady.   I want people to come over sit on the couch hang out get their hair did / nails did (laughs)    I want my customers and friends leaving the salon feeling .. they're the Phenomenal woman!  Now .. just to get the  moohlah to do that.

But  it will happen ..  I'm 40 years old now.   Let's get this party started eh?

So ... it's been a while!

Well it's been a while since I last posted here.   Things had  taken a turn or the good the worst the bad and the best.    All in all life has  kept going.   Really everything is perfectly fine.   So  I was sitting playing my Secondlife (yes  I do that kind of stuff and design if I don't have designer's block)    And  wanted to do a blog for fashion for SL.   Never  is much  northern / viking / winterfell type  medieval clothing.   It's always  ...  well that's a whole different realm and subject *laughs*

As you know my hearing hasn't improved.  Nor has my vision But   either way I'm good!   Haven't worked in a while due to  the economy.   Remember that post about To Booth or not to Booth?  Heh   It's like this. No clientele   no money to buy your own supplies and  renting a booth can either make or break you.   So  working in a salon  is  on hold for now.

Then comes ... Oh  yes I'm diabetic now.   Luckily I'm on Medicaid since I am not working.   Problem is. If I work I lose my medicaid.  Lose my medicaid I have like  800 dollar  bill   every month on top o  4oo dollar every three month checkup.   So    that makes it a tad bit difficult don't you think?

So  with that figured  just focus on trying to get my exams taken care of and pass it.  Oh yes I passed the  practical with flying colors.   I didn't pass the Written cause I missed it by   3 points.   Nice eh?   So I need to retake the written.   Yes I can do it! I will do it!!   First ... need the  $80  to do it.  I love how it takes  boocoo bucks to be able to get in the next step of your life and hopefully  back to work.   But really in the end it does pay for it's self.     But this time I'm not going to  ask for a modified  exam book.  Where they enlarged the words for me.    This time I'm going to do it via computer.  Shouldn't be too difficult.  What was difficult for me being blind is having to fill in those lil circles.   AH  Nightmare!   Brings back memories from the old TAAS / SAT  tests in Texas *laughs*

So  with that I'm doing good.   Still dealing with some ups and downs but I still never lost my passion for  Nails and Beauty.   I think I'm going to work on getting back into it. Some how  Just need to buy supplies *smiles*

For those of you who stuck by?

Thank you ....  There's not enough words in the world for me to tell you just how much it means to me.

If you got any questions  hit me up!  I'll surely answer.   ;)

Figured I try getting back in to writing again...

Well it has definantly been a while since I wrote on my blog.   I suppose I can give ya'll the gist of what's been going on since the last post which was eons ago *laughs*

Let's see.  I've  worked at Cut Up Curl Up and Dye for a short time.  Then it was shut down but  reopened as a school Academy of Barbering Cosmetology and Esthetics.  Based in Willard Missouri.   I finally went to beauty school to get my  license as a full fledged Cosmetologist.  But I havne't gone to boards yet but I will soon enough.   Finished my hours just not my testing.

But on a good note I finally have a job at Textures Salon and  let me tell you  it's nothing compared to my previous job.   I love this place.  And don't get me wrong I love my old job  too.  But this is a nice change. Smaller salon.  I know one Co Worker Karlie from my  school days when I attended for nail tech.   She's awesome and  sweet as apple pie.   Everyone there is awesome.   And my best friend works there too.  *smiles*

I'll be doing booth rent once I come up with 100 dollars  for my booth license and 50 a week for the booth rental.  But  for now I'm doing commission.

So I will be doing polish reviews in a few days maybe put up one tonight.  Shellac  and other things.  Products I like and also  doing some  notes bout experiences with what to do or what not to do.   As a stylist and nail tech.

Those of you who have kept tabs on my blog thank you for being patient and not giving up on me.   Ya'll are my inspiration ;)

UV Nail Lamps Safe or Unsafe? Truth unfolded! (reposting for Doug Schoon )

Do UV Nail Lamps Emit Unsafe Levels of Ultraviolet Light?
Three Experts Rebut Claims that UV Nail Lamps are Unsafe for Skin
Doug Schoon, M.S. Chemistry, Chief Scientific Advisor, CND; Paul Bryson, Ph.D. Chemistry, Director of R&D, OPI Products; Jim McConnell, BA Chemistry, President, McConnell Labs

Introduction

A recent report incorrectly claimed that UV nail lamps are a source of "high-dose UV-A" and also inaccurately compared UV tanning beds with UV nail lamps. The report, "Occurrence of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers on the Hands After UV Nail Light Exposure" (MacFarlane and Alonso) 1 , overestimated the exposure of client skin to UV light emitted from UV nail lamps and improperly characterized the effect of these lamps on the hand.
As three of the leading scientists in the professional nail industry, we were surprised by these claims. To verify the facts, using an independent laboratory we tested the leading UV nail lamps to determine how much UV-A and UV-B they emit and then compared that to natural sunlight.

Testing

In preparation for our study, we tested many UV nail lamps to determine which had the highest UV output and, as expected, found the nail lamp with the highest output was one designed to utilize four 9-watt UV bulbs. We also decided to test a popular UV nail lamp designed to utilize two 9-watt UV bulbs. The purpose for testing both lamps was to determine how exposures vary across the range of UV nail lamps with the goal of providing information that would apply to the majority of salons and situations. The selected two bulb UV nail lamp was chosen and tested because it is a popular brand and representative of other UV nail lamps within the two 9-watt UV bulb category. The selected four 9-watt UV bulb nail lamp was chosen because it had the highest measured UV output of any UV nail lamp tested. No attempt was made to test UV nail lamps utilizing only one UV bulb, since the overwhelming majority of UV nail lamps use two, three or four UV bulbs. The UV nail lamps selected for testing are likely representative of more than 90% of the UV nail lamps used in salons.

Lighting Science, Inc., of Phoenix, AZ., is a fully equipped, completely independent scientific testing laboratory that specializes in the development and testing of many types of illumination devices, including those that emit UV light and Lighting Science is not in the business of manufacturing or selling UV nail lamps. The two selected UV nail lamps were submitted to Lighting Science in brand-new condition. Highly sensitive UV detectors were placed where client hands would normally reside while inside a UV nail lamp. These detectors accurately measured the amount of UV-A and UV-B light emitted from each UV nail lamp. To ensure a proper comparison, Lighting Science also used the same test equipment to measure the UV-A and UV-B light found in natural sunlight. A discussion of these measurements and results is presented below.

Discussion

The MacFarlane and Alonso report made several errors and misstatements concerning artificial nails products and how they are applied. The most notable involves the improper estimation of UV exposure to the skin by UV nail lamps, resulting in a faulty report conclusion. It is incorrect to conclude that putting a hand into a tanning bed with twelve 100-watt UV bulbs is the same as putting that hand into a UV nail lamp with four 9-watt bulbs because: 1) tanning bed users typically use these devices more often and for much longer periods than seen with nail salon services, 2) the authors mistakenly assumed that UV bulb "wattage" is a measure of UV exposure to the skin, when wattage is actually a measure of energy usage, 3) the authors erred significantly by relying solely on UV bulb wattage to estimate the actual amount of UV exposure to skin, and 4) they neglected to consider that UV light reflects many times inside the tanning bed and these internal reflections further increase UV exposure to skin, again demonstrating that MacFarlane and Alonso approach to estimating UV exposure to skin is not valid. Their comparisons to UV tanning beds simply doesn't make sense logically or scientifically.

The UV testing performed by Lighting Science used proper scientific techniques and equipment to measure both UV-A and UV-B radiation in terms of milliwatts per centimeter squared (mW/cm2), which is a measure of how much UV light falls upon each and every square centimeter of skin (about 1/8 square inch). It is important to understand that UV-B is considered by many to be more potentially damaging to skin than UV-A, which is why nail lamps rely on special UV bulbs that contain internal coatings designed to filter out most of the UV-B light.

It is important to note that clients visit a salon for UV gel nail application or maintenance twice each month and that each of their hands are placed into the UV lamp for intervals of two minute or less, for a total of 6-10 minutes. In this report, we will always assume the highest level of exposure: 10 minutes per hand, twice per month.

Results

Testing by Lighting Sciences produced the following information:
1. UV-B output for both UV nail lamps was less than what was found in natural sunlight.
The bulbs used in UV nail lamps contain special internal filters which remove almost all UV-B, so this result is not surprising. The test results show that the amount of UV-B to which client skin is exposed is equal to what they could expect from spending an extra 17 to 26 seconds in sunlight each day of the two weeks between nail salon appointments.

2. UV-A exposure is much lower than suggested by MacFarlane and Alonso.
Test results show that UV-A exposure for client skin is equivalent to spending an extra 1.5 to 2.7 minutes in sunlight each day between salon visits, depending on the type of UV nail lamp used. A nail lamp with two UV bulbs corresponds to 1.5 minutes and a nail lamp with four UV bulbs corresponds to about 2.7 minutes each day between salon visits.

MacFarlane and Alonso claimed to find two cases of skin cancer that they suggest were caused by UV nail lamps. Both of their patients live in Texas, a climate where significant incidental UV exposure from sunlight is inevitable even in the absence of deliberate recreational exposure. One patient had been exposed to a UV nail lamp only eight times during the same year (we assume every two weeks for 4 months). During this same period, the patient would have been exposed to more UV-A and UV-B simply by spending 10 to 20 minutes eating her lunch outdoors in natural sunlight once per week.

Oddly, the authors described this patient as a 48-year-old white woman who claimed to have "moderate recreational UV exposure". We fail to understand how, under the circumstances, it could be concluded that this case of nonmelanoma skin cancer is caused by these eight exposures to a UV nail lamp, especially in light of the low levels of UV exposure expected during these few visits to a salon. We respectfully disagree and believe the results of Light Science’s independent testing are in agreement with our own laboratory findings supporting the safety of UV nail lamps.

Conclusion

• McFarlane and Alonso's report has a faulty conclusion because it is based on incorrect assumptions.
• Our testing shows that UV nail lamps emit relatively low levels of UV light and these exposure levels are considered well within safe levels when they are used to perform UV artificial nail services in nail salons.

Unfortunately, inaccurate information can have a long-term damaging effect, even when later disproved. Already, some are unfairly distorting the risks of cancer on Internet blogs, YouTube and other media outlets, even to the extent of offering the exceptionally unwise advice of forgoing the UV curing of products that will not cure otherwise. We believe a fair examination of the facts supports the conclusion that UV nail lamps are safe when used as directed and brief client exposures are as safe as brief exposures to natural sunlight. Client hands are likely to be exposed to more UV light while driving their cars than they will receive from UV gel nail services.

Nail UV lamps are safe when used as directed. Nevertheless, we recognize the Nail Technician's need to address client concerns. For those clients who express anxiety, a Nail Technician can consider doing the following to make the service more reassuring:

• Place a small piece of white cloth over the hands when placing them in the UV nail lamp.
• If a client insists on wearing sunscreen, they should still be asked to wash their hands before any salon service begins. In this case, the Nail Technician should take special care to ensure nail plates are properly cleansed and dehydrated in order to prevent service breakdown (e.g. product lifting, discoloration or mottling) from the film sunscreen products can leave behind. Also, it is crucial to keep sunscreen lotions and sprays away from implements and supplies used during the nail service to avoid contamination.
